Library Media Teacher Goals
To foster the joy of reading and to support students in lifelong learning.
To support students in their quest for academic and personal excellence.
To promote the use of information technology and the critical evaluation of electronic resources.
To provide leadership, collaboration, and instructional design assistance to teachers.
To ensure the maintenance, support, and continued use of the library media program.
Information Literacy and Library Skills Lessons
Digital and information literacy standards, as well as library skills, are taught by the library media teacher in three ways:
--as monthly lessons given to students through their English Language Arts period (see Pacing Calendar link at bottom of page
--as lessons given to classes at the request of their content-area teachers
--incorporated into collaborative research projects.
Effective school library programs are based on the "Information Literacy Standards for Student Learning" developed by the American Association of School Librarians and Association for Educational Communications and Technology. Student learning standards and model program standards are provided by the California Department of Education's Model School Library Standards For California Public Schools, Kindergarten Through Grade Twelve.
The Cole Middle School Library serves approximately 750 seventh and eighth grade students with a collection of over 16,000 items.

Policies and Procedures
Up to three books may be checked out for up to two weeks, with an opportunity for renewal. Videos and DVDs are not available to students for check-out, but may be used for research by the student in the library. Late fees are not assessed; however, patrons with lost or damaged materials may be required to pay by cash or money order for the replacement of the material.
Cole Library is administered by the library media teacher, Debra Sabol. Mrs. Sabol has earned a Master of Arts Degree in School Library Media and Information Technology, and a Bachelor of Science degree in Child Development/Family Relations. She holds a California Multiple Subject Teaching Credential with a Cross-Cultural Language Acquisition certificate, a Library Media Teacher Credential, a Special Class Authorization in Digital Literacy, and is a Google Level 1 Certified Educator. She has been employed by Eastside Union School District since 1986, having also previously instructed in the fifth and sixth grades.
